Knee arthroplasty

During arthroplasty of a knee, destroyed joint surfaces of femoral and tibia bones get removed and replaced with artificial structures, fixed with bone cement. Consequently, knee prosthesis comprises of two metal joint components (femoral and tibial ones) and plastic liner. In some cases, articular surface of a patella is replaced also.

This surgery is indicated in the following cases: 3-4 stage of deforming osteoarthritis of a knee, aseptic necrosis of femoral and tibia condyles. During the operation, a surgeon applies a special navigation system to straighten the axis of the extremity to eliminate varus (O-shaped) or more complex valgus (X-shaped) knee deformity.

The surgery lasts 1-1.5 hour under the spinal anesthesia. Rehabilitation and walking with crutches begins since the first day after the operation. The patient has to stay at clinic about a week. As a rule, after the operation the patient returns to the regular life, however significant physical loadings are contraindicated.
